Windsor Lancers football player Nathan Guizzetti dies days after season opener

Nathan Guizzetti, a running back for the Windsor Lancers, died over Labour Day weekend at the age of 19.

His family made the heartbreaking announcement on social media with tributes pouring in for the former star high school athlete.

“Rest easy, Nathan. You were the best big brother anyone could ever ask for, and you never deserved what happened to you,” Nathan’s brother, Cole, posted on Instagram on Monday.

“I still can’t believe you’re gone, and my heart hurts knowing I have to live without you. I’ll forever cherish our memories, the laughs, and every moment we shared. I love you and I’ll miss you more than words can say. Until we meet again, brother.”

The 16-year-old Cole, who is a forward with the OHL’s Flint Firebirds, shared several photos of himself with his brother.

Who was Nathan Guizzetti?

Nathan played in Windsor’s season opener on Aug. 29 against the McMaster Marauders. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound return man racked up a total of 156 yards on seven punts and four kicks.

Nathan reportedly died on Sunday, the day of the Lancers played their home opener.

“The Windsor Athletics community is deeply saddened by the passing of Nathan Guizzetti, a valued member of our Lancer football family whose presence will be missed on and off the field,” the school wrote in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with Nathan’s family, friends, teammates and coaches during this difficult time. Lancers, please know that support resources are available and you are encouraged to reach out if you need someone to talk to.”

Where was he from?

Guizzetti was a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and a star high school athlete while attending Korah Collegiate.

“Nathan had a profound and positive impact on everyone in his life. His big smile would light up every room he entered,” wrote the school in a statement.

“Nathan epitomized what it means to be a Korah Colt: incredible work ethic, selfless, humble, kind, tough, respectful, a leader, and the ultimate teammate.

“Nathan’s greatness will be everlasting. We love you Nathan, and we’ll miss you.”

A GoFundMe page has been started to help the Guizzetti family with funeral and memorial costs.

As of Thursday morning, the page had blown past its original goal of $10,000, having surpassed $74,000 in donations.
