Fans watching Monday’s match between Argentina and Austria had a few questions after global pop star Shakira was spotted in attendance.
It wasn’t that the Colombian music icon was at Dallas Stadium to watch Lionel Messi break the record for most career FIFA World Cup goals, it was what happened when she was shown on the live TV broadcast.
When the camera locked on to her sitting in a luxury box at the stadium, the person seated to her left quickly reacted by putting his arm around her and going in for a kiss — which didn’t seem to have been wanted in the moment.
Fans were confused by the sight, commenting about it on social media and asking what had just occurred.
What did social media say?
“Is Shakira OK?” one fan account asked while posting a video of the awkward moment.
Another user on X asked, “Who’s this guy trying to force a kiss on Shakira?”
But the fact of the matter is that, while it may have looked awkward, it was all just a playful family moment.
Shakira was taking in the game with her two sons, 13-year-old Milan and 11-year-old Sasha, with the younger boy going in for the kiss.
Once it was realized that the incident involved her son, social media praised the scene.
“What a fantastic family moment,” one user replied on X.
“Hahaha Shakira with her two heartthrobs, how they love her, her kids and Milan all clingy with love,” another user wrote.
The two boys are the sons of the 49-year-old singer and former Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique. Although Shakira and Pique never married, they were together for 11 years, from 2011 to 2022, before breaking up amid the ex-defender’s infidelity.
After the original moment on Monday, Shakira and her sons were shown again a few minutes later, receiving a large round of applause and leading to her waving to the fans.
What is Shakira doing at the World Cup?
Shakira has once again partnered up with FIFA to provide a theme song for the massive summer tournament.
This time around, she recorded with rapper Burna Boy the official anthem of the 2026 World Cup called Dai Dai.
The music video features several soccer stars and has racked up more than 221 million views on YouTube since its release a month ago.
After performing ahead of the opening in match of the tournament in Mexico City earlier this month, Shakira also is slated to perform during a star-studded halftime show during the final game next month.
