The Blue Jays’ clubhouse magician may have vanished, but he has left a parting message for the team and its fans.
Veteran catcher Tyler Heineman, who played a small but important role in last year’s run to the World Series, was traded to the Angels on Wednesday for cash considerations.
While the move wasn’t unexpected, it stirred emotions with fans and players alike.
On Wednesday night, Heineman shared his feelings over the situation and thanked his former team in a post on Instagram.
What did Heineman write?
“Blessed. As I head on a plane to my 12th MLB team, the only word that keeps replaying in my head is blessed,” Heineman began his post.
“These past 5 years have been nothing short of incredible. From being a Blue Jay, to getting traded to the Pirates, to getting claimed again by the Jays, to getting claimed by the Red Sox, to once again get claimed by the Jays all in the span of 3 years was CRAZY! But every time I came back, I loved it more and more.
“My wife and I started our family here. Growing from a family of 2 to a family of 4. I’m so grateful to my girls for their continued support during this crazy and unpredictable career. Especially my wife. I love you, Emma and Brooke more than anything in the world. Thank you.”
Heineman, who included several photos of his good times in Toronto with his family and teammates, also wrote that being part of last year’s playoff run was “the most fun I’ve ever had in my career,” adding that “the bonds that I formed with my teammates over these last 5 years can never be broken. You are all my brothers and I love you guys more than you could ever know.”
He also thanked the organization and all of its staff for his time with the club before sharing a special message for the fans.
“To the fans, you are amazing,” he wrote. “The amount of people that reached out to me throughout my tenure and especially after I got released, thank you. You are the best part about playing for Toronto. Never change.”
The Blue Jays later shared Heineman’s post on their social media accounts, thanking him for his time with the team.
Why did the Blue Jays trade Heineman?
The 34-year-old backup catcher had been part of the Jays since 2024, when he was claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
But while he impressed in a backup role last year, hitting .289 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 61 games, he has struggled mightily in 2026.
When all-star catcher Alejandro Kirk was shelved for months with a broken thumb, rookie Brandon Valenzuela stepped up and has earned his spot on the Jays roster.
That left the personable journeyman expendable and he was designated for assignment when Kirk returned from the IL last week.
Did Heineman have a message for his new team?
The Angels will be Heineman’s 12th team of his seven-year MLB career, over the course of which he has played in 203 games and posted a career slash line of .226/.303/.306.
In Heineman’s message, he also shared that he’s excited to join his new team, for whom he grew up rooting for.
“I’m excited to join the team I grew up rooting for as a child. The 2002 World Series game 7 was one of my fondest memories as a kid,” he wrote.
“To Angels fans, I promise you I will do everything I can to let you experience that joy I had as an 11 year old.”
