It didn’t take long for the Tempo’s Marina Mabrey to get her true ‘Welcome to Toronto’ experience, it seems.
The WNBA all-star went viral over the weekend for a post on X tearing into Rogers, complaining about the company’s WiFi and poor service.
“Someone please help me with Rogers WiFi. It literally doesn’t work, and they never answer my calls,” Mabrey posted Saturday on X.
The tweet drew all kinds of reactions from fans and followers online, with many telling her to switch services while others quipped that she had experienced an all-too-common ‘Welcome to Toronto’ moment.
Did Mabrey get her WiFi fixed?
At practice on Monday, Mabrey, 29, was more than happy to air her grievances with the Canadian telecom giant while speaking with reporters.
“Rogers? Let’s talk about Rogers for a second,” she began her rant. “(A technician) came and told me to take all my stuff out of my closet, that was crazy. He was like, ‘Yeah, it’s fixed, it had your apartment number wrong or something,’ so now it works.
“Two hours later, I’m watching the Indiana (Fever) game. There’s 13.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, cut off. I have no idea what happened.”
A reporter then asked how Mabrey felt about fans saying that she’s officially a Torontonian now after this experience.
“I’m not. I don’t want to be part of this,” she joked.
“I want my WiFi to work. I’m sick to death. I can’t order anything … I can barely FaceTime.
“I’m pissed. I’m about to tweet back at Rogers again.”
Hopefully Mabrey has been able to get her Internet situation sorted out as she and the Tempo have a tough task on their plate. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are in Toronto on Tuesday night for the WNBA superstar’s first game north of the border.
Does Rogers own the Tempo?
In perhaps a strange coincidence, the Tempo happen to be the biggest professional sports team in Toronto that isn’t owned by Rogers.
The telecom giant, which is headed by Ed Rogers, secured a deal to acquire Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment last month, consolidating power in the Canadian sporting landscape under one umbrella.
With the purchase, Rogers will attain full control over the MLB’s Blue Jays, the NHL’s Maple Leafs, the NBA’s Raptors, Toronto FC of MLS, and the CFL’s Argonauts, among other minor franchises, properties and sports holdings.
However, the Tempo is outside of that group and is primarily owned by Kilmer Sports Ventures, led by chairman Larry Tanenbaum, with several minority owners.
