The action on the field in Los Angeles didn’t end with the Bills game-winning field goal against the Rams on Monday night.
After the dust settled on Buffalo’s 37-34 overtime win, Rams offensive lineman apparently took exception to something that Bills pass rusher Bradley Chubb either said or did and took a swing at him.
The entire incident was caught on camera by ESPN and quickly went viral as fans tried to figure out what caused the dust up.
What happened between Jackson and Chubb?
In the clip broadcast by ESPN, the Rams offensive tackle was seen exchanging jerseys with Bills defensive tackle Deone Walker player when Chubb appears to say something to Jackson and point as he’s walking away.
Jackson – who was born in Windsor, raised in Detroit and holds dual citizenship – then pursues Chubb to confront him and, after exchanging some words and the Bills player appears to give Jackson the middle finger, the Rams stalwart takes a swing at Chubb’s head, knocking off his hat.
Teammates from both sides quickly separated the players as Chubb was pulled away by his shoulder pads.
What was Alaric Jackson’s punishment?
The NFL didn’t look to kindly upon the incident, coming down hard on Jackson on Tuesday evening.
Jackson, the Rams’ longest-tenured player, was suspended for two games without pay for his actions.
“After the game, as players were shaking hands and exchanging jerseys, Jackson struck Buffalo linebacker Bradley Chubb in the face after a brief confrontation, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,’” the NFL explained in a statement.
“Have to make better decisions than that,” Rams coach Sean McVay said, per ESPN.
Jackson reportedly will appeal the league’s ruling.
It’s unclear if Jackson’s history of off-field issues played a factor in his ban.
In June, Jackson was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence after a confrontation with a woman at his home in California, but is likely to avoid criminal charges. The league has yet to rule on potential discipline.
He also had been suspended for the first two games of the 2024 season for an undisclosed violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
What did Bradley Chubb say about the punch?
After the game, Chubb spoke about the incident, but wouldn’t get into detail about the altercation.
“It was a close game,” Chubb told the California Post. “And, you know, they always catch the second guy, so I let him swing and my teammates held me back and I just chilled.”
While the footage showed that it was Jackson that took the swing, Chubb wouldn’t speak about the incident any further.
“That’s not on me to tell who (it was),” he told the outlet. “There’s cameras out there. I just know I’m ready for next week.”
Chubb also wouldn’t confirm if Jackson’s punch actually connected, either.
“You see I’m smiling,” he said. “I’m with my team. I’m turnt. We’re ready for next week.”
