Gone in the Wave: Canadian soccer fan goes viral after phone goes flying at FIFA World Cup

While Canada’s Round of 32 matchup against South Africa at FIFA World Cup on Sunday may have produced an exciting finish, there’s no denying there were a few down spots.

However, one fan produced a viral moment for all who were watching – at the expense of her phone.

Early in the second half of the match at Los Angeles Stadium, a woman seated next to a glass railing was trying to get in on some fun when disaster struck.

The fan, who was wearing a black Canadian soccer jersey, had her phone in her hand as the wave came around and, as she raised her arms, the phone went flying out of her hands.

She initially tried to catch it as it fell over the railing to the section below before covering in her mouth in shock.

What was happening in the game?

The moment came just a few minutes into the second half of a match in which South Africa seemingly was content to try to push the contest towards extra time and then penalty kicks, repeatedly passing the ball amongst defenders and back to goalkeeper Ronwen Williams – elicting heavy boos from the crowd.

When the clip was posted on social media, many users replied that it had been the most exciting moment of the match to that point.

“I am more invested in this lady getting her phone back than I am in the game,” one user commented on Reddit.

“This is the highlight of this match,” another said. “Water break was cool, too.”

How did Canadian fans celebrate the win?

Canada more than made up for the lack of thrills in the match by grabbing the late win. Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio played the hero, hitting a shot past a few defenders and into the bottom corner of the net in second-half injury time.

After the match, Eustaquio posted an emotional photo of himself in Canada’s locker room with the caption “For the country,” and invited Instagram followers to leave their comments on the moment.

Canadian fans were seen partying in the stadium concourse after the match, jumping around and singing while also tossing some fans in the air.

In the locker room, several Canadian players were seen dancing — including Ismael Kone, who suffered a broken leg and underwent surgery last week.

Canada will hope to carry over the excellent vibes to its next match, which will take place on Saturday, July 4 in Houston, Texas. Team Canada will face the winner of Monday night’s matchup between Morocco and the Netherlands.
