For a player who was an unused sub during Sunday’s thrilling FIFA World Cup match between England and Mexico, Jordan Henderson certainly had an eventful evening at Estadio Azteca.
During the exciting Round of 16 matchup, Henderson was once again relegated to the end of bench, but got himself on the scoresheet in the eighth minute of second-half injury time when he received a yellow card for arguing with referee Alireza Faghani from the sideline.
However, that caution won’t come into play for Henderson or the Three Lions because the Brentford midfielder likely will be out for the remainder of their World Cup run.
What happened to Henderson?
In a freak accident, the 36-year-old former Liverpool captain suffered what appeared to be a broken arm after he fell over a barricade at the stadium.
The team was celebrating with their supporters while Wonderwall by Oasis played on the stadium’s sound system when Henderson went to jump over an advertising board.
While England defender Dan Burn easily cleared it, Henderson’s hand slipped out from under him as he planted it on the board and then he fell to pitch, landing on his left arm, which appeared to buckle under his full weight.
Burn quickly turned around and saw Henderson was hurt. He then called for help from trainers on the sideline.
Henderson ended up being taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to hospital.
“Not good, not good. Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” England manager Thomas Tuchel said of Henderson’s injury during his post-game press conference.
Henderson reportedly remained in Mexico City while the team returned to its World Cup base camp in Kansas City.
“He’s at the moment in the hospital, so it’s quite a serious injury,” Tuchel said. “It just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure (that’s) going on.”
What are Henderson’s teammates saying?
“Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s OK, just something to do with his arm,” captain Harry Kane said.
“He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got everything under control,” Jude Bellingham added. “It’s probably best not to say too much when I don’t really know what was going on. But everyone was there to support him, and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Henderson had played just six minutes during the tournament, coming on as a substitute in the team’s final group stage match against Panama.
England’s quarterfinal match will take place on July 11 at Miami Stadium against Norway, which scored a big win over Brazil in its Round of 16 match on Sunday.
