An NHL prospect has been hospitalized in Arizona after collapsing following an “off-ice training incident,” the OHL says.
Matthew Mayich, a St. Louis Blues draft pick, had been training at Arizona State University’s outdoor track when he collapsed following his workout.
According to the Arizona Republic, the 21-year-old defenceman suffered what was described as a “possible cardiac event.”
The outlet was the first to report Mayich’s identity after ASU declined to do so, citing privacy rules. The school had only confirmed that a hockey player had collapsed during an outdoor exercise.
What did the OHL say?
As news of the medical incident involving Mayich went viral, there was an outpouring of support for the native of Stoney Creek, Ont.
The OHL shared a message on Wednesday, sending its “thoughts, prayers and support” to Mayich and those close to him.
“Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina and the entire Mayich family,” OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford said in a statement posted on the league’s website. “Matthew spent four seasons in our league and earned the respect of everyone he played with and against. The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts.”
What did the Blues say?
The St. Louis Blues, which selected Mayich in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft, also shared a statement of support on Wednesday.
“The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona,” the team posted on X.
“We extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
Mayich played for four seasons with the 67’s, suiting up for 256 total games. He posted 21 goals and 99 points during his OHL career before playing the 2025-26 season with Clarkson University.
