The leader of our nation has a message for Jays Nation as the team fights to stay in contention for a spot in the MLB playoffs: You gotta believe.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the Blue Jays during an event this past weekend, during which he met with Karla Courtney — the Toronto Blue Jays fan that went viral during the team’s magical run to the World Series last year for knitting a sweater during playoff games.
Carney posted a video with Courtney on Sunday, during which she presented the PM with his own version of the handknit Blue Jays sweater, which was put on display at the Canadian Museum of History earlier this year.
After trying on the sweater — which is made of Canadian wool and was inspired by her grandmother — and complimenting Courtney on her excellent work, the two began to talk about the 2026 edition of the team, which currently sits last in the AL East with a record of 57-63, but is just 3.5 games out of a wild-card spot heading into Tuesday’s games.
“My message to Jays Nation,” Carney began, “you got to believe we are going to get that wild card.”
He added that he was not going to take off his brand-new sweater.
Carney and Courtney then shared their favourite Blue Jays player, with both picking Vladdy.
What did Carney say about Vladdy?
“My favourite player is Vladdy, Vladdy Guerrero Jr.,” Carney said. “He’s the real deal. He’s everything, including as an individual.”
Courtney added that Joe Carter was her other all-time favourite Blue Jay.
Hopefully the PM’s words will be a boost for Guerrero, who is enduring the worst season of his career at the plate.
Guerrero is hitting a career-low .261 and has just seven home runs this season – with none coming at home. In fact, of all qualified players, Guerrero is one of just three in the Majors to have not gone yard in their home ballpark, along with Chandler Simpson of Tampa Bay and Nasim Nunez of Washington.
As one user on Reddit pointed out, two different players named Max Muncy have homered in Toronto more recently than Vladdy has.
Guerrero, who isn’t known for his speed, also has the same amount of home runs this season as he does stolen bases.
He’ll once again be looking to end his home drought on Tuesday night, as the Jays take on the Red Sox in the second game of their three-game series.
