Yankees crowd boos Canadian national anthem, two fans tackled for running on field

Yankees fans showed their true colours during Game 3 of the ALDS on Tuesday night, booing the Canadian national anthem and then later running onto the field, delaying the game.

The crowd in the Bronx was slammed online after video clips went viral of loud jeers during the pregame rendition of O Canada, sung at Yankee Stadium by Graham Rowat.

While some fans did show their appreciation for the Canadian anthem, boos and chants of “U-S-A!” can be heard in clips shared from around the stadium.

“Stay classy, Yankees fans,” one user wrote on X.

“Classless. You didn’t see Canadians doing it during this series,” another rightly pointed out after fans in Toronto didn’t boo the Star-Spangled Banner before Games 1 and 2 of the series at Rogers Centre.

“Typical New York,” a third user wrote.

The anthem booing wasn’t the only example of classless behaviour from Yankees fans, either.

Two men ran onto the field during the game — and suffered the consequences.

During the top of the fourth inning with Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the plate, one fan hopped over the barrier and ran towards centre field while being chased by security.

The fan gets taken down hard by one member of the stadium security team before being piled on by three others and subdued.

But that apparently was only a distraction as another fan hopped onto the field and ran towards the pitcher’s mound.

After a brief chase, he was also taken down and pinned by members of the security force.

Security should have their guards up for Game 4 on Wednesday night, with first pitch set for 7:08 p.m.

Cam Schlitter is set to take the mound for the Yankees, while the Blue Jays will use Louis Varland as an opener in what should be a bullpen game.

Toronto hitters should have their hands full with the rookie Schlitter. During the clinching game of the American League wild-card series against the Red Sox, the righty held Boston to five hits over eight shutout innings, while also striking out 12 hitters and walking none.

The Yankees were able to come back from an early 6-1 deficit and win 9-6 on Tuesday night to force Game 4. Should they take Wednesday night’s game, Game 5 will take place on Friday back at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
