Isis Sio, a 19-year-old boxer, is awake and breathing on her own two days after having been put in a medically induced coma.
The women’s junior flyweight was knocked out in the first round of her fight against Jocelyn Camarillo in the opening bout of Saturday night’s ProBoxTV’s card in San Bernardino, Calif., suffering serious injuries in the process.
During the fight, Sio was battered against the ropes by a series of punches to the head by Camarillo before collapsing onto the bottom rope just over a minute into the match.
The referee quickly ended the bout and Sio received immediate medical attention. She reportedly could be seen convulsing as she left the arena on a stretcher and was taken to Loma Linda University Health medical centre for treatment.
On Monday evening, both the event’s promoter and Sio’s family said that the teen has awakened from the coma, but remains in hospital.
“Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator and we are hopeful for her progression,” a press release from Sio’s camp said, per the Guardian. “We are awaiting further updates from her medical team. She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition.”
ProBox TV, which hosted the card on Saturday, also shared the “promising” news.
“We have some promising news to share,” ProBox TV posted on X. “Isis is no longer in a medically induced coma, has been taken off the ventilator, and is now breathing on her own.
“We are awaiting further updates from her medical team.”
The bout was just Sio’s fourth as a professional and was her second consecutive knockout loss. She now holds a record of 1-3 after turning pro in Sept. 2025.
What did Camarillo say about the fight?
The 21-year-old Camarillo extended her undefeated record to 6-0.
Early Monday, Camarillo posted on Instagram that while she is “grateful for the moment,” she is praying for Sio’s recovery.
“All glory to god. came prepared, gave it my all,” she posted along with a series of pictures from the day of the fight. “Grateful for the moment but my heart is with Isis and keeping her in my prayers and wishing her a full recovery.”
“Our thoughts are with Isis Sio and her family as she remains in a medically induced coma following her recent fight,” DAZN Boxing posted on X on Monday afternoon. “We are wishing her strength during this difficult time.”
The extent of Sio’s injuries remain unclear, as well as how long she will be in a coma.
