Cardinals hero involved in car crash hours after extra-innings game‑winning hit

The Cardinals’ Masyn Winn nearly went from ecstasy to agony in a matter of hours, but appears to be OK after all.

Shortly after delivering a win for his team in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon, the St. Louis shortstop was involved in a single-car accident, ending up in hospital.

Winn was driving alone when he encountered some wet pavement, which was ruled the cause of the crash.

He required assistance from police as well as from officials from the Cardinals’ security and medical staff.

After being checked out at the scene of the accident, Winn was transported to a hospital for evaluation, where he was found not to have suffered any serious injuries. He was later released.

What did the team say?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the team said Winn is “OK” after the incident.

“Following today’s game, Masyn Winn was involved in a single-car accident (on Interstate 64) due to wet pavement,” the team’s statement said, per the outlet. “Masyn, who was alone in the vehicle, was attended by local police and Cardinals security and medical staff. He was examined at a nearby hospital and suffered no serious injuries.

“We are grateful that he’s OK, and thank the first responders in our community who helped Masyn tonight.”

What happened in the game?

During the Cardinals’ matinee match, Winn played the unlikely hero, driving in the winning run in the 11th inning to beat the visiting Mets 2-1.

Winn hit a bloop single to right field with two outs to drive in the winner, which was the first walk-off hit of his young career.

The 24-year-old has struggled at the plate so far this season, posting a batting average of just .160 while his RBI on Wednesday was his first of the year. Throughout his four-year MLB career, Winn has hit at a .250 clip while winning a Gold Glove last year.

“I think it was a swinging bunt for my first hit last year,” Winn said after the game. “I think that’s what got me going. Maybe it’s something like that. At some point, I’m going to get hot.”

The Cardinals have Thursday off before beginning a series against the Tigers in Detroit on Friday afternoon. It is unclear if Winn will be in the lineup for the game and if he will miss any time.
