Sorry, Bo, it’s not your name that Mets fans are saying.
Bo Bichette has gotten off to a rough start with his new team after Toronto for the Big Apple this off-season — and the fans in Queens are letting him hear about it.
The former Blue Jays all-star was heavily booed during Sunday’s game at Citi Field after striking out to end the seventh inning with runners on second and third in a tied game.
The strikeout was Bichette’s eighth of the young season for the Mets, with whom he signed a three-year, $126-milliion US contract in January.
Through Sunday’s game, Bichette has just one hit in 14 at-bats to go with one run and one RBI.
It obviously is very early, but his .071 batting average is far below his career .293 mark.
What did Bichette say?
After Sunday’s game, Bichette addressed the jeers he received from the Mets faithful, admitting that he also felt his at-bats were “terrible.”
“If anything, I thought it took too long,” Bichette told reporters in New York. “I get it. I thought my at-bats were terrible, too.”
He also fell short in a pair of big moments during the season-opening series against the Pirates, failing to deliver during two extra-innings at-bats.
Bichette also said that perhaps he was trying to hard to make an impact after signing his big free-agent deal to leave Toronto after seven seasons.
“I definitely felt that, wanting to have a moment,” he said. “Not only for my teammates, but for the fans and everything. So, that’s something I have to manage.”
He also added that he hasn’t been feeling “good” in the batter’s box yet to start the year.
“Sometimes (I’m) in-between, sometimes trying to do too much,” Bichette said. “That’s pretty much what happens when you don’t feel good.”
Despite Bichette’s struggles, the Mets won two of three games against Pittsburgh to open the year. They were set to be back in action on Monday night against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
