Ravens kicker Tyler Loop and his fiancee have been hit with a wave of hateful messages after after the rookie missed a crucial field goal on Sunday night.
Loop had a 44-yard game-winning field goal attempt go wide right as time expired, giving the AFC North title to the host Steelers with a 26-24 win at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
Had Loop made the kick, Baltimore would’ve won the division on a tiebreaker and made the post-season.
Many fans took it personally online, posting several hated-filled messages on the social media accounts of Loop and his fiancee, Julia Otto.
The main target is a joint Instagram post celebrating the couple’s engagement last year.
“Going to spend forever wondering how I got this lucky. I cannot wait to marry my best friend and the best guy I’ve ever known,” Otto captioned a post with several images of the proposal.
What comments were made?
“Hope you get divorced,” one person wrote.
“Still have time to cancel the wedding,” another commented.
“I pray ur wife is cheating on u,” a third wrote.
Others posted reaction gifs of a woman taking off a wedding ring.
Several users also called for the team to bring back veteran kicker Justin Tucker, who Loop replaced. Tucker was an all-pro kicker for Baltimore for several seasons, but was suspended by the NFL for 10 games in Jan. 2025 after being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple massage therapists.
Loop commented on the agonizing miss following the game, after he was seen being consoled by head coach John Harbaugh.
What did Loop say?
“For it to end like that sucks, and I want to do better,” Loop said. “Unfortunately, the nature of the job is you have makes, and those are awesome, and unfortunately, you have misses, and for that to happen tonight sucks.”
Loop’s missed field was a one-of-a-kind attempt — something never before seen in NFL history
According to OptaSTATS, it was the first field goal attempted to come as time expired in the fourth quarter of the final week of the regular season with both team’s playoffs hopes resting solely on the result of the kick.
And, for the record, there have been more than 60,000 field goals attempted in NFL history.
Loop made 90% of his field-goal attempts (30-for-33) before his first game-winning attempt missed the mark.
Priest had blessed the end zone
According to his Instagram bio, the rookie considers himself a “follower of Christ,” which ironically adds some pain to Loop’s miss as the Steelers had a priest bless the end zone with holy water before the game.
“This is a priest who is spreading holy water in that end zone,” NBC play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico said after the game.
“The Catholic community in Pittsburgh is really strong, and its ties to the Steelers are everywhere,” Tirico added with a laugh. “And down at that end zone, Tyler Loop misses the field goal and allows the Steelers to win.”
“So it’s not Tyler Loop’s fault,” Cris Collinsworth chuckled.
“As with everything in football, it’s at a higher power,” Tirico responded.
