Tuesday was a tough one for the Diggs family.
First, it was reported that Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges.
In the afternoon, Stefon’s younger brother, Trevon Diggs was released by the Dallas Cowboys with one game remaining in the NFL season.
According to Boston 25, the charges against Stefon reportedly stem from an alleged incident on Dec. 2, the day after the Patriots defeated the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
According to a police report, per ESPN, a woman claiming to be a private chef went to police on Dec. 16 and accused Diggs of entering her unlocked bedroom and allegedly smacking her across the face after they had discussed money owed to her.
She said she was attempting to push Diggs away when he allegedly tried to choke her with his elbow around her neck and later threw her on to the bed.
She initially told police on Dec. 16 that she didn’t want to file charges against Diggs before deciding to do so Dec. 22, according to the authorities.
Diggs denies allegations
According the team, Diggs has denied the allegations.
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations,” the organization said in a statement. “We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.
“Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Diggs’ attorney, Michael DiStefano, argued in court that the police report should be impounded, adding that his client made a financial offer to the alleged victim to end the issue, per the outlet.
The 32-year-old wide receiver is an 11-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler. He is in his first season with the Patriots, signing with the team after suffering a torn ACL with the Houston Texans last year. He previously suited up for the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills.
Diggs reportedly is set to be arraigned on Jan. 23, which would be two days before the AFC Championship game, though the judge agreed to consider a request to delay it until March.
Trevon Diggs released two years after massive extension
The reported charges came just hours before the Dallas Cowboys waived cornerback Trevon Diggs, who was in the midst of a five-year $97-million contract extension signed in 2023.
Trevon, 27, has struggled to stay on the field since signing the contract — which featured roughly $33 million in guarantees — after suffering a torn ACL two games into the 2023 season and missing two months with a concussion suffered during an accident at home.
He also missed six games in 2024 due to groin and knee injuries.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports his release “was the culmination of multiple factors spread over time, including both performance and other elements.
“The team felt it was best for both Trevon and the Cowboys to move on at this point.”
