Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin died while in police custody on Saturday morning after the all-pro allegedly was involved in a home break-in.
The East Bay Times reported that Martin had a “medical emergency” and then a “brief struggle” ensued.
The former Pro Bowler allegedly resisted arrest when police attempted to detain him and then became unresponsive before being transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Oakland Police have not specified why Martin was being detained or what the “medical emergency” was.
Martin, who played seven years in the NFL with the Bucs and Oakland Raiders, was 36 years old.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” Martins’ family said in a statement.
His cause of death is under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
As per protocol, the officers involved in the incident have been put on administrative leave.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement. “From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

He played his final season in his hometown of Oakland before retiring after the 2018 season.
