Blue Jays fans break another Loonie Dog record at Rogers Centre

Tuesday just happened to be International Dog Day, which was fitting at Rogers Centre for many reasons.

The first being that the Toronto Blue Jays’ hound himself, Chris Bassitt, got the start against the Minnesota Twins.

The second was that it was another one of the team’s incredibly popular Loonie Dogs nights — when fans can treat themselves to hot dogs for the low price of just $1 each.

While the official total number of hotdogs bought and consumed by fans, several announcements were made throughout the game and posted on video boards at the downtown dome.

Roger Lajoie, a radio host for Sportsnet 590 The Fan, posted a pic showing that 85,386 dogs had already been purchased — and it only was the sixth inning.

Another fan posted a clip of the Loonie Dog counter eclipsing the lofty mark of 88,000.

By the end of the night, though, one user on X posted a pic showing an astounding total of 92,103 total dogs, while another claimed that 96,633 were sold.

With an announced attendance of 42,235 fans at the game, that’s roughly 2.28 hotdogs per person.

The previous record had been 84,731 hot dogs, which was set on July 22 during a game against the New York Yankees.

Blue Jays fans will have two more chances to top the new record this season. The next Loonie Dog night comes on Sept. 9 against the Houston Astros while the final opportunity of the year comes on Sept. 23 against the Boston Red Sox.

The record for most Loonie Dogs sold in a season is 727,819, which was set last year and is sure to be broken.

But, while the fans were busy celebrating their latest dog-devouring feat on Tuesday night, the Jays managed to choke one away on the field.

Closer Jeff Hoffman surrendered four runs on two ninth-inning home runs to blow his seventh save of the season. The Blue Jays clawed back one run in the bottom of the ninth, but ended up losing the game 7-5.

The Jays wrap up their three-game series with Twins on Wednesday night with the first pitch set for 7:07 p.m. Toronto will send Eric Lauer to the mound while the visitors counter with Simeon Woods Richardson — a former Jays prospect.
